Employee Benefits and Services
The City of St. George Human Resources department is responsible for administering various personnel functions for the municipality. The department aims to handle all individual situations and employee needs in an honest, respectful, and objective manner to serve the best interests of both the city and its citizens.
Comprehensive Personnel Benefits
According to the Human Resources department, the city provides 100% coverage for premiums on High Deductible health plans for full-time employees and their qualified dependents. The city also offers two Traditional medical plans, with employees able to pay the premium difference to select a plan with a lower deductible.
Additional benefits provided by the city include dental and vision insurance, flexible spending and health savings accounts, and retirement savings plans at the employee's discretion. Health care coverage begins on the first day of employment. The city also provides 12 paid holidays and 12 paid sick days annually.
Youth Leadership Opportunities
The St. George Youth City Council (SGYCC) serves as a self-directed group of teenagers tasked with representing and advocating for the youth population to the St. George City Government. The program focuses on developing future leaders, providing a formal voice for young people, and engaging in community service.
To participate in the SGYCC, students must be between 14 and 18 years of age, live within the City of St. George, and be enrolled in a middle or high school. There are no fees required to join the council.
Council Member Commitments
Members of the Youth City Council are required to attend 80% of weekly meetings, as well as bi-weekly meetings held during the summer before the school year begins. These meetings typically last between one and 1.5 hours.
Through the program, members learn about local government operations and take an interest in addressing community events and youth issues while promoting city values such as integrity, innovation, efficiency, teamwork, and excellence.
Law Enforcement Mission
The St. George Police Department, led by Chief Kyle Whitehead, operates within a city covering approximately 75 square miles in the southwest corner of Utah. The department utilizes a community-oriented policing approach that emphasizes problem-solving, ethical practices, and the establishment of lasting partnerships.
The department's mission is to preserve life, maintain human rights, protect property, and promote individual responsibility. To support this mission, officers receive training in areas including de-escalation, mental health, defensive tactics, firearms, and ethical decision-making.
