Please note the following weekly announcements.
1. No School – Monday, September 7
As a reminder, there will be no school next Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. We hope our students and families enjoy the long weekend!
2. Beginning-of-Year NWEA Testing
Beginning-of-Year NWEA testing continues this week.
August 31–September 11: Students will participate in NWEA Reading assessments, along with make-up testing for students who need to complete previously scheduled NWEA assessments.
3. Picture Day – Tuesday, September 1
Picture Day is Tuesday, September 1. Please remind your child that school pictures are intended to be professional photographs that accurately reflect the student's appearance. These photographs are used in our official student information system, may assist with student identification in an emergency, and are included in the school yearbook.
4. PTA Meeting & Membership
Our next PTA Meeting is Tuesday, September 1, at 10:30am. All interested parents and guardians are invited to attend!

5. Vision Screenings – Tuesday, September 1
Vision screenings will take place on Tuesday, September 1, for all 7th grade students and select 8th grade students. If you have questions regarding vision screenings, please contact our school nurse, Carol Simmonds, at carols@provo.edu.
6. After-School Programs
Our After-School Program will begin in a couple weeks. Students will have opportunities to participate in a variety of programs where they can explore interests, develop skills, and participate in activities and competitions that may not otherwise be available during the regular school day. Programs will generally meet Monday through Thursday from 3:00–4:00pm. Students who regularly ride the bus to school will have access to a late bus that can take them to their regular bus stop following after-school activities. After school program fees are $15 per program. Additional information, including specific offerings and schedules, will be shared in next week's newsletter.
7. School Community Council Elections
School Community Council (SCC) elections begin Monday, August 31, at 9:00am and close Friday, September 4, at 4:00am. There are four open parent/guardian seats on the SCC. Parents and guardians may vote online using the Google Form below or visit the CMS Main Office and speak with our Administrative Assistant, Liana Mangisi, to complete a paper ballot. 8. CAPTI Reading Assessment
Beginning September 16, select students who have been identified as reading well below grade level will participate in the CAPTI reading assessment.
CAPTI is a web-based reading assessment that helps us develop a more detailed understanding of a student's reading skills. It examines several areas of reading, including word recognition, vocabulary, understanding word parts, sentence comprehension, reading efficiency, and overall reading comprehension.
The results provide teachers with additional information about individual student strengths and areas where additional support may be needed. Teachers can use this information to provide targeted instruction, create small groups focused on specific reading skills, build upon skills students have already mastered, and monitor reading growth.
CAPTI will not be administered to every student. Students will be selected based on multiple pieces of reading data. Specifically, students identified as performing well below grade level on NWEA Reading who also demonstrate a low score in oral reading fluency may be selected to participate.
Students selected for CAPTI may miss one or two class periods in order to complete the assessment.
Our goal is to use this additional information to differentiate instruction and provide students with the right support at the right time, helping them grow as capable and confident readers.
