An artificial intelligence camera system enabled North Summit firefighters to quickly extinguish a lightning-caused fire near Lewis Peak on July 17, 2026, preventing the blaze from potentially threatening regional communications infrastructure.
AI Detection at Lewis Peak
The Pano AI camera system detected a smoldering fire located several miles north of Tollgate Canyon and west of Hoyts::ville. North Summit Fire District crews were able to suppress the flames shortly after the detection, according to Battalion Chief Tyler Rowser.
Preventing Infrastructure Threats
Rowser noted that he did not observe any smoke from the Lewis Peak area during his time at the office that day. He warned that without the early detection, the fire could have smoldered for several days until rising temperatures and winds turned it into a much larger issue.

The Lewis Peak camera station, which also provides alerts to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, is part of a network that includes two other stations near Hideout and Morgan. The Pano AI system uses two cameras with a 180-degree view to monitor the Wasatch Back. The technology, which is funded by Rocky Mountain Power, allows real humans to review potential fires flagged by the AI to decide if subscribers should be notified via text.
