Oversize vehicles are permanently prohibited from the Zion–Mt. Carmel Highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance effective Sunday, June 7, 2026, according to a report from UZona Record.
New tunnel vehicle restrictions
The new restrictions eliminate tunnel escort permits that previously allowed large vehicles to pass through the 1.1-mile Zion tunnel with a ranger. The ban applies to the entire stretch of highway between Canyon Junction and the East Entrance, targeting vehicles that exceed specific dimensions, including a maximum height of 11 feet 4 inches and a maximum weight of 50,000 pounds.
Required alternate travel routes
Travelers using oversized RVs, campers, or fifth-wheels must now use alternate routes. Those heading toward the Arizona Strip will be directed south out of Hurricane through Hildale and Colorado City via Highway 59. This shift is expected to increase traffic on the two-lane highway used by local residents. Other rerouted paths include using Highway 59 to reach Page, Arizona, or traveling via US-89 north through Kanab to reach Bryce Canyon.
Safety studies and expansion limitations
The restrictions follow safety studies conducted in 1989 and 2019, which were validated by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. Officials noted that expanding the historic highway—which was dedicated on July 4, 1930—is not feasible due to the terrain and potential damage to the park's natural landscape.
