Ogden City officials have announced that the state fire restriction will remain in effect citywide as Utah faces a period of extreme wildfire danger. Following a state of emergency declaration by Governor Spencer J. and authorized restrictions from the Utah State Forester, Ogden City has determined there are no safe locations within city limits for fireworks discharge at this time.
The ban is currently in effect and will be reevaluated based on changing conditions prior to the Pioneer Day holiday. The Ogden City Police Department and Ogden City Fire Department will fully enforce these restrictions.
Mayor Ben Nadolski stated that while the decision was difficult, especially during the nation's 250th anniversary celebration, the city must prioritize protecting lives, homes, and infrastructure. He noted that after reviewing conditions with public safety professionals, no area in Ogden could be safely identified for fireworks discharge.
Fire officials conducted a comprehensive review involving the Ogden City Fire Department, police, and emergency management partners. The evaluation considered factors such as drought-stressed vegetation, wind and weather conditions, topography, and the potential for rapid fire spread.
Ogden Fire Chief Mike Slater noted that Utah's firefighting system is currently stretched thin due to large wildfires across the state. He explained that if a fireworks-related fire occurs in Ogden, requested assistance from outside crews, aircraft, or specialized resources may be delayed or unavailable.
The restriction comes as human-caused fires represent the majority of fire starts during a season where firefighters are actively working to contain multiple large wildfires. Law enforcement and fire personnel will patrol neighborhoods, parks, trails, and river corridors to enforce the ban.
Individuals found responsible for fires caused by illegal or negligent fireworks use may face financial responsibility for suppression costs and property damage, as well as potential criminal liability for reckless conduct. Residents are encouraged to attend authorized public events, such as the Lindquist Pops Concert and fireworks show or the Ogden Raptors fireworks night, to celebrate safely.
