This school year, Provo City School District is inviting students, families, educators, and our entire community to Read Across the World with ProvoREADS, our district-wide commitment to literacy.
At the heart of ProvoREADS is a simple goal:
Every Child. Every Day.
We want every child in Provo reading every day—not because reading is simply another assignment to complete, but because reading opens doors. Through books, students can travel to places they have never visited, discover new perspectives, explore unfamiliar ideas, build knowledge, and better understand the world around them.
But if we want our children to become readers, they need to see that reading matters to all of us.
That’s why Every Child. Every Day. is also an invitation to our entire community.
Every student. Every teacher. Every parent. Every community member. Every day.
When children see the adults around them reading, talking about books, sharing stories, visiting libraries, asking questions, and making time to learn, they see that literacy isn’t something that only happens at school. It is something we value as a community and something we carry with us throughout our lives.
Read Across the World
This year’s ProvoREADS theme, Read Across the World, turns that commitment into a year-long reading adventure.
Reading can take us anywhere. Throughout the school year, students will travel through a series of monthly themes inspired by different stages of a journey. Along the way, they will be encouraged to discover books that interest them, establish strong reading habits, read with their families, talk about what they are reading, explore new genres and formats, challenge themselves, and celebrate their growth as readers.
Each month will also feature a simple Family Reading Challenge. Schools and classrooms will bring the themes to life in their own ways through read-alouds, activities, celebrations, displays, and opportunities to make reading visible and exciting.
And we hope our community will join them.
Pick up a book while your child reads. Tell a student about something you’ve been reading. Share a favorite book with a neighbor. Visit the library as a family. Let children see teachers, parents, grandparents, neighbors, and community leaders making reading part of their lives.
Small moments can send a powerful message: In Provo, we are readers.
August: Pack Your Bags
Every Reading Journey Begins with One Book
Our first destination is Pack Your Bags, a month dedicated to preparing for the reading adventures ahead.
Every great adventure starts with a single step, and every lifelong reader starts with a single book. As the school year begins, we encourage students and families to find books that spark their curiosity and establish a simple, consistent reading routine.
A few minutes of reading each day can add up to meaningful growth over time. Whether students are reading independently, listening to someone read aloud, sharing a book with a family member, or discovering a favorite new series, what matters most is making reading part of every day.
August Family Reading Challenge: Read in a New Place!
Take your book somewhere different this month. Read under a tree, at the park, on the porch, at a grandparent’s house, in a blanket fort, or anywhere else your reading adventure takes you.
And adults—we challenge you to join in.
Bring your own book. Read alongside a child. Let the young people in your life see you choosing to read, too.
Provo, Let’s Read
Building strong readers takes all of us. Schools provide instruction, practice, resources, and encouragement, but a culture of literacy extends far beyond the classroom.
Imagine what our children will see when reading is visible everywhere they go—at school, at home, in our libraries, in our businesses, in our neighborhoods, and throughout our community.
That’s the culture we want to build together.
