Desert Hills High School took first place in the Region 9 boys golf season opener on Wednesday at SunRiver Golf Club in St. George, Utah. The team finished the match with a four-player score of 277, marking seven strokes under par.
The season opener, held one week before the start of the school year, took place at a par-71 course under hot and windy weather conditions. Despite these conditions, nine players achieved a score of par or better. Desert Hills head coach Marco Leoni stated that the performance demonstrates the toughness of Region 9 throughout the upcoming season.
Desert Hills saw all five of its top players finish at par or better. Junior Luke Christensen led the team with a 4-under score of 67. Senior Chase Leavitt shot a 69, while senior Hayden Quertimont recorded a 70. Sophomore teammates Zaden Ebert and Karev DeMille both posted even-par scores of 71.
The Dixie Flyers finished in second place with a score of 286, two over par. Their performance was led by Luke Brown, who shot a 69, and Dezmond Kirchhausen, who shot a 70.
The Crimson Cliffs Mustangs placed third with a team score of 289, finishing three strokes behind Dixie. The Mustangs were led by Will Milne with a 70 and Taylor Jacobsen with a 71.
Hurricane and Snow Canyon tied for fourth place with scores of 300. Other team scores for the week included Cedar at 314 and Pine View at 321.
Coach Leoni noted that the team featured a mix of new and familiar faces and expressed pride in the performance, specifically noting that five players finished in the top 10. The next Region 9 match is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 12, at SunBrook Golf Club in St. George.
