The Amelia Earhart Elementary School Community Council met Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, to approve updated bylaws and review student achievement data, including reading and math trends. The meeting, which included Principal Patricia Blanton, focused on the 2026-27 School LAND Trust Plan and Title I parent engagement strategies to support student growth.
Bylaws and Council Structure
During the meeting held at 11:00 a.m. in the school conference room, council members voted unanimously to adopt revised bylaws. The updates aim to align the council with current requirements and clarify the structure of the organization. Specifically, the new procedures establish a formal process for electing the council Chair and Vice Chair, ensuring that the Chair is a parent member. The council also clarified the implementation of staggered two-year terms for members.
Member Roles and Engagement
The council reviewed the current composition of the School Community Council, which consists of eight voting members: six parent or guardian members and two school employees. The principal serves as an ex officio voting member, while the second employee representative is elected. The council also discussed the importance of parent-school engagement, specifically regarding Title I expectations and the Parent-School Compact, presented by Lauren Moon.
Student Achievement and TSI Review
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing beginning-of-year student achievement data. The council examined grade-level trends in reading and mathematics to identify areas of strength and specific needs. Discussions focused on the school's Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI) designation, with members reviewing achievement data for identified student groups, including students with disabilities and multilingual learners. The council explored current interventions and how progress will be measured throughout the academic year.
School LAND Trust Funding
The council also reviewed the implementation of the 2026-27 School LAND Trust Plan. This plan utilizes funds provided annually by the Utah School Land Trust Program to support academic goals, strategies, and resources. For the 2026-27 school year, Amelia Earhart School is slated to receive $76,426.34 in funding through the program. Members discussed whether current expenditures align with the approved plan and reviewed measures used to monitor student outcomes.
Conference Week and Early Release
In a separate message released on Oct. 5, 2026, Principal Patricia Blanton informed families that the week of Oct. 5-8 is Student-Teacher Enrichment Session (SEP) Conference Week. Due to the conferences, the school implemented an early release schedule, with students being dismissed at 1:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Dr. Blanton emphasized that conferences are an opportunity for families and teachers to celebrate progress and set goals for student growth in areas like reading and math.
Upcoming Community Events
The school also announced upcoming community events, including a PTA Fall Carnival held on Oct. 5 and a ProvoREADS Literacy Night scheduled for Oct. 15 at Shoreline Middle School. The literacy event is designed for families with children in preschool through 3rd grade and will feature interactive workshops covering skills such as phonemic awareness, blending, and reading comprehension.
Staff Recognition
The school community recently recognized Kyle Bates, the director of construction services for the Provo City School District, with the Provo Way Award. Blanton, who nominated Bates, praised his consistent presence in addressing school needs, ranging from installing new gates to improving traffic flow. Bates was noted for his work on recent improvements at Amelia Earhart, including a new roof, new fencing, and an expanded kindergarten playground.
