The Provo City School District Board of Education is proceeding with the construction of a new elementary school at the former Dixon Middle School site. According to an undated notice on the district's site, the project is intended to serve Timpanogos students and families while addressing facility limitations at the current campus.
The current Timpanogos Elementary site, located along 500 West, faces challenges including limited space for instruction, specialty programs, and outdoor activities. The district noted that the school has relied on portable classrooms due to the site's inability to accommodate the enrollment of approximately 600 or more students. Additionally, safety concerns have been raised regarding pedestrian access and traffic on 500 West and 500 North, including past incidents where students ran toward the roadway.
The project is estimated to cost approximately $38 million for the new building. The district plans to fund the construction using existing capital resources and a portion of the 2025 Municipal Building Authority bond. Officials stated the district is not currently planning an additional bond specifically for the new elementary school.
Construction milestones include the release of plans for bidding in December 2026, with major construction expected to begin in late January or early February 2027. The school is anticipated to open in August 2028. As of September 2026, crews were finishing the removal of remaining foundations and site materials at the Dixon property.
The final name for the new school has not been selected. While a motion to name the school Dixon Elementary failed 2–5, the district is considering both Timpanogos Elementary and Dixon Elementary as options. The district intends to recognize the history of Dixon Middle School through historical displays, plaques, and a tribute wall using saved bricks.
