Dora Jean Buchanan Hancey passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, in her 94th year of life. According to a report published Sept. 19, she was with loved ones at her side when she died in Logan, Utah.
Born on May 21, 1933, in New Albany, Indiana, to James William and Sylvia Rosalie Hood Buchanan, Hancey was the first of three daughters. She was an exceptional student with interests in reading, science, art, and penmanship.
Hancey married Ellis Bland Hancey on Oct. 21, 1949, after meeting him in Lafayette, Indiana. The couple eventually settled in Logan, Utah, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan Temple on Oct. 21, 1952.
For over three decades, Hancey and her husband operated the Intermountain Radio & TV business from a home and shop located on 1000 North and Main Street in Logan. Hancey was also known for her devotion to her faith, serving in various leadership callings within the Relief Society, Primary, and MIA, and completing an 18-month mission in New York from 1998 to 1999.
Hancey was described as the anchor of her family, known for her diligent work in her garden and her skill in preparing large family meals. Her artistic interests included textile painting, cake decoration, and raising flowers.
She is survived by seven children: Curtiss (Barbara) of Manteca, California; Donna (Danny) Erickson of Smithfield; Louise (John) Brown of Layton; Sylvia (Lornel) Tibbitts of Logan; Marianne (Casey) Christensen of Hyde Park; David (Laurel) of Hyde Park; and Neil (Lauri) of Hyde Park. She also leaves behind a nephew, Jim Everse, 23 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Hancey was preceded in death by her husband, Ellis; her parents; a son, James Willard; sisters Mary Lynn Marra and Janice Mae Buchanan; son-in-law Danny Erickson; grandchild Kim Erickson; and great-grandchild Ellis Hampton Hancey.
A viewing is scheduled for Sept. 26, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Hyde Park 1st Ward chapel. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location, with interment to follow in Hyde Park Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Home in Logan.
