BYU head men's basketball coach Kevin Young announced the addition of Patrick Mutombo as an assistant coach on Monday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2026. The move brings the former NBA assistant and USA Basketball coach to Provo to join the Cougars' coaching staff.
Extensive Professional Experience
The hire, which the BYU Men's Basketball X account announced on Aug. 31, 2026, adds a coach with significant experience working with elite global talent, according to a press release from BYU Athletics. Mutombo has coached players including Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and Devin Booker.
NBA Championship Pedigree
Mutombo is a native of Kinshasa, Zaire, and has spent much of his career in high-level professional basketball. He was an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors during their 2019 NBA championship run, where the team defeated the Golden State Warriors 4-2 in the NBA Finals to become the first non-U.S. team to win an NBA title. During his four-year tenure with the Raptors, Mutombo helped the organization achieve a 221-97 record and maintain a top-three finish in the Eastern Conference every season.
Toronto Raptors Tenure
During the 2019-20 season, which was shortened due to COVID-19, Mutombo and the Raptors went 12-3 in the regular season and advanced to the semifinals. In the following season, the team finished atop the Eastern Conference and reached the conference final, falling to the Delaware Blue Coats. While with the Raptors, Mutombo also assisted in the team's victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2019 conference semifinals, a series decided by a buzzer-beater from Kawhi Leonard in Game 7.
International Coaching Success
In addition to his NBA experience, Mutombo has been a prominent figure in international basketball. He served as an assistant coach with USA Basketball over the previous two years, contributing to a 3-1 record during the World Cup Qualifying Window #1 and #2. He also served as an assistant coach on Stephen Siilas' staff during the 2025 FIBA Men's AmeriCup, a tournament in which the team earned a bronze medal after a 4-2 record.
Recent Coaching Roles
Mutombo's recent coaching roles include a stint with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2024-25 season. During that season, the Grizzlies finished second in the Southwest Division with a 48-34 record and secured the No. 8 seed in the playoffs. He previously worked with Kevin Young during the 2022-23 season with the Phoenix Suns and spent a year working with Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee.
Developmental Coaching
Prior to his NBA assistant roles, Mutombo served as the head coach of the Raptors 905 for two seasons, leading the team to the best record in their division in consecutive seasons. His earlier coaching career includes a position as an assistant for the Austin Spurs in 2015-16 and a role with the Denver Nuggets from 2012-15.
Collegiate and Playing Career: Metro State:
Mutombo's professional career began as a player. A 6-foot-5 forward, he played for Metro State from 1999-2003, where he was a two-time NCAA Division II National Champion under Mike Dunlap. During his junior year in 2002, he was named the RMAC Player of the Year after averaging 16.6 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2002 Elite Eight following a 29-point performance in a 80-72 championship victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. Mutombo was inducted into the Metro State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011.
