A major improvement project is underway to reimagine Sunnyside Park in Salt Lake City, with a total budget of approximately $5 million. The initiative utilizes funds from the Parks GO Bond along with $4.2 million provided by the University of Utah.
The project is currently in the design and document review phase. Following the finalization of construction documents, Public Lands will begin the bidding process to select a contractor, with construction tentatively expected to begin in 2027.
The project scope is driven by three primary priorities identified during community engagement sessions held in late 2024. These goals include adding amenities that serve diverse interests and ability levels, maintaining and upgrading existing sports facilities, and increasing unprogrammed leisure areas through the addition of trails, trees, and open spaces.
Funding for the project comes from two main sources. The Parks GO Bond, approved by Salt Lake City voters in November 2022, provides $750,000 for the Reimagine Neighborhood Parks initiative in City Council District 6. Additionally, a $4.2 million payment is being provided as part of a ground lease agreement with the University of Utah.
The lease involves 1.175 acres of city-owned property at Sunnyside Park to allow the University of Utah to expand its baseball playing field to meet NCAA requirements. The agreement includes an initial $4.2 million payment from the University to the City, followed by annual payments of $1.00 for a 99-year term.
Community input has played a significant role in shaping the park's future. During the fall of 2024, over 350 residents provided feedback through surveys and events. A second round of engagement in May 2025 gathered 539 survey responses regarding three specific design concepts.
The project team is currently adjusting designs based on the feedback received during this most recent public input period.
