Arizona State freshman quarterback Jake Fette is in line to make his first collegiate start against No. 8 BYU on Saturday, according to a report published October 30.
Sun Devils head coach Kenny Dillingham stated on Arizona Sports’ Bickley & Marotta that Fette is the probable starter for the upcoming matchup in Provo, Utah.
The potential start for Fette is dependent on the availability of sixth-year quarterback Mikey Keene. Keene is considered a gametime decision after suffering a knee injury during his first ASU start last week against Kansas State.
Keene has practiced in a limited capacity throughout the week but has been able to move around decently, according to Dillingham. While the current plan involves Fette, Dillingham noted that Keene would start if he is able to play.
The expectation for Fette to start has been present since he entered the game against Kansas State. During that matchup, Fette helped spark a 28-17 comeback victory after the Sun Devils trailed 17-14.
In that appearance, Fette completed 3 of 6 passes for 45 yards across four full drives. The offense during that win relied heavily on freshman running back Cardae Mack, who scored all four of the team's touchdowns.
Fette was the top recruit in Arizona State's 2026 class and was ranked as the 11th-ranked quarterback in the nation by 247
Sports.
Prior to the Kansas State game, Fette's only collegiate action came in the season opener against Morgan State, where he went 1-for-2 for 13 yards.
Dillingham noted that the coaching staff aims to protect high-quality freshmen like Fette. The coach expressed a desire for the spark and confidence Fette showed during the recent comeback win.
