Saige Loflin, a seventh grader from Sage Canyon Middle School, won the Alpine School District Holiday Card Contest with a digital winter scene. Her artwork was chosen in late November from nearly 70 student submissions representing various grade levels and schools across the district.
The card featuring her illustration was mailed in early December to neighboring school districts, legislators, state officials, and every school within the Alpine School District.
The winning piece was created using Procreate on an iPad. The digital illustration depicts a festive winter streetscape featuring three gingerbread-style homes with frosted roofs and holiday lights. The scene also includes a snowman in a top hat, evergreen trees, and a red sleigh resting in the snow.
Students were permitted to use any medium for the contest provided the work was horizontal and created without the use of artificial intelligence tools. Saige, who entered the competition independently, stated that participating made her feel more confident in her artwork.
Saige received formal recognition during the Alpine School District Board Meeting on December 9. As the only student from the contest invited to attend the meeting, she was presented with a certificate from the district, ten printed holiday cards, and a framed copy of her artwork.
While fourteen other finalists from across the district received prizes and congratulations, Saige received the district-level recognition. Her mother, Lauri Loflin, expressed pride in Saige's achievement and noted that the recognition helps build her confidence.
The holiday card contest has been a tradition for the district for several years and is planned to continue next year. Karen Ashman, a communications specialist at Alpine School District, stated that the district is proud of Saige and pleased to have her art representing the district.
The contest serves to highlight student voices and encourage artistic development within the community.
