The Utah Highway Patrol serves as a leader in motorist education through its Public Information and Education team. The program utilizes presentations and outreach events to address the top five high-risk driving behaviors, which include impaired driving, seat belt non-use, speeding, aggressive driving, and distracted driving.
Seat belt safety demonstrations
To promote increased seat belt usage, the PI&E team utilizes two seat belt convincers. These tools simulate a 5 mile per hour crash to demonstrate how a seat belt holds a person safely in place during an impact without causing injury.
Educational presentations for various groups
Troopers also provide presentations to schools, businesses, and various organizations throughout the state. These sessions can be tailored to focus on specific safety topics such as motorcycle safety or winter driving.
Citizens Academy program details
The Utah Highway Patrol occasionally hosts Citizens Academies at various locations across the state. These academies are designed to provide citizens with information on how the UHP functions by introducing attendees to patrol tactics, police operations, and defensive tactics. Participants may also take part in a firearms training scenario.
Academy application status update
While these programs aim to increase community understanding of law enforcement roles, the department is not accepting applications for the academy at this time.

The PI&E team is available to schedule presentations or seat belt convincers for events. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the team, noting that earlier scheduling is preferred.
