A Fire Weather Watch remains in effect for western Box Elder County, including the Salt Lake Desert area. The watch is driven by low humidity, strong winds, and the potential for dry thunderstorms.
Weather officials stated that widely scattered dry thunderstorms are possible across northwest Utah on Saturday afternoon and evening. These storms may bring gusty and erratic outflow winds exceeding 40 mph, with isolated gusts potentially reaching 60 mph near areas of virga or thunderstorms.
The current weather conditions create a heightened risk for the start of wildfires and rapid fire growth. Any existing fire or new ignition may spread quickly under these circumstances.
In response to the elevated danger, Stage 1 Fire Restrictions became effective at 12:01 a.m. on June 19, 2026. These restrictions apply to unincorporated state and private lands within Box Elder County but do not apply within incorporated city or town limits.
Under the Stage 1 restrictions, open fires are prohibited except in approved fire rings or grills at developed campgrounds with pressurized water systems, or in permanently constructed fire pits at private residences that have pressurized water systems. Smoking is prohibited unless it occurs within an enclosed vehicle, trailer, building, a developed recreation site, or an area paved or free from dry vegetation.
Additionally, the use of fireworks, tracer ammunition, exploding targets, and other pyrotechnic devices is prohibited. Cutting, welding, or grinding metal in areas containing dry vegetation is also banned. Small internal combustion engines, such as ATVs, motorcycles, and chainsaws, must be equipped with a properly functioning spark arrestor.
Box Elder County officials stated that conditions are favorable for rapid fire growth due to dry vegetation, strong winds, and potential lightning-producing storms. They encouraged the public to do their part in protecting lives, property, and natural resources.
Residents and visitors are urged to use extra caution outdoors, avoid activities that could create sparks, and immediately report smoke or fire by calling 911. Under Utah law, violations of Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.
