A string of high-impact traffic accidents across Utah has resulted in several fatalities involving semi-trucks and motorcycles, according to recent reports. The incidents, spanning from Herriman to Morgan County, include fatal rollovers on major interstates and a notable increase in motorcycle-related deaths despite a decrease in total crashes statewide.
Fatal Semi-Truck Collisions
In Herriman, a 40-year-old motorcyclist died following a collision with a semi-truck on 12600 S. The crash occurred approximately one month ago when both the motorcycle and the semi-truck were traveling westbound on the roadway.
Interstate Disruptions and Rollovers
Recent reports also detailed a fatal single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 84 in Morgan County. Approximately five days ago, a semi-truck driver was killed after being ejected from the vehicle during the accident. The driver was traveling on I-84 at the time of the crash.
Other semi-truck incidents have caused significant traffic disruptions. About one month ago, a pickup truck towing a camp trailer rolled in a two-vehicle collision in Kaysville, causing the trailer to hang over the edge of an Interstate 15 overpass. In Lindon, the Utah Department of Transportation reported on social media that multiple lanes were blocked in both directions of I-15 following a semi-truck rollover about one month ago.
Further north, near Tremonton, a semi-truck rolled onto its side early on a Tuesday morning, blocking westbound lanes on Interstate 84, according to reports from the Utah Department of Transportation.
Rising Motorcycle Fatality Rates
Motorcycle-related fatalities have seen a significant upward trend in the state. While total roadway fatalities and overall motorcycle crashes in Utah have decreased, motorcycle fatalities have risen by 32.60%. Officials noted that while there are fewer accidents, the severity of those that do occur has increased.
In Sandy, a 24-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 15 roughly three months ago. The Utah Highway Patrol responded to the scene just before 10:30 p.m. Additionally, two months ago, three motorcycles were involved in a crash on Trapper's Loop in northern Utah, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. One of those motorcycles was traveling northbound on SR-176.
In Millard County, ten months ago, two motorcyclists were killed in a head-on collision with a box truck after the truck crossed into their lanes just before 5 p.m.
Safety Concerns and Investigations
The Utah Department of Transportation has faced scrutiny regarding road safety following a fatal crash on the Mountain View Corridor that claimed the lives of a husband and wife. This incident occurred approximately two years ago.
Other notable recent accidents include a fatal rollover in West Haven, where officials with the Weber County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as a 62-year-old man from North Ogden. The crash occurred on a Friday morning roughly one month ago involving a Dodge pickup.
A crash in Cache County, which killed two teenagers approximately seven months ago, was linked by investigators to both speed and a lack of seat belt use.
Additional Regional Traffic Incidents
Recent incidents have also involved passenger vehicles in various capacities. In South Jordan, approximately six months ago, an SUV ran a red light and struck another vehicle, resulting in the hospitalization of two adults and a toddler.
A recovery dive team was called to Tooele County about one month ago to assist in recovering a submerged vehicle following a deadly crash. The driver, 35-year-old Jose Angel Chavez of Tooele, was alone in the vehicle at the time.
In Salt Lake County, a rollover involving two vehicles blocked lanes on State Route 201 on a Sunday evening approximately two months ago. Additionally, about two months ago, the West Valley City Police Department reported a rollover crash that may have been caused by sun glare, which led a driver to potentially run a red light.
Weather-Related Road Hazards
Weather and road conditions continue to impact Utah's major corridors. In Box Elder County, several crashes were reported on Interstate 15 during winter weather, including a collision between a semi-truck and a car on southbound I-15. At the time of those incidents, first responders urged drivers to exercise caution.
