Salt Lake City is preparing to launch the Utah Community Clean Energy Program in January 2027. According to an October 2 report, the city will begin sending out official notices regarding the initiative this November.
The development of the program follows more than ten years of work to create a system that brings more renewable energy onto the grid to serve the community.
In addition to energy initiatives, Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Salt Lake City Sustainability Department announced funding recipients for the 2026 SLC Food Microgrant program. The grants aim to increase access to fresh, healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food for Salt Lake City residents during a time of high costs, inflation, and SNAP program cuts.
The Rose Park Bee Club was named a recipient of this year’s Community Microgrant through the Salt Lake City Sustainability Department. The funds provided to the club will be used for education and to make beekeeping more accessible for all.
Salt Lake City's sustainability efforts also include infrastructure and waste management updates. Two new electric vehicle chargers were recently added at the new Glendale Regional Park through a partnership with Grid Elevated.
Additionally, the city's 2025 recap noted that residents recycled 9 million tons of material and transitioned various gas-powered yard care equipment to electric models.
Further details regarding the upcoming Utah Community Clean Energy Program will be distributed to the public starting in November.
