The Drug Enforcement Administration's Rocky Mountain Field Division issued a warning after a laboratory identified illicit pills containing deadly mixtures of fentanyl/carfentanil and fentanyl/heroin.
Officials seized the tablets in both the greater Salt Lake area of Utah and the Denver area of Colorado.
DEA RMFD Special Agent in Charge David Olesky stated that with these findings, people in communities should never take a pill from anyone unless it comes from a prescribing doctor or pharmacy.
The DEA identified fentanyl as the largest drug threat the United States has faced, noting it has killed hundreds over the last decade. The agency also noted that the drug combination involving fentanyl is highly unusual.
Carfentanil is described as an animal tranquilizer that is reportedly 100 times stronger than fentanyl. Additionally, officials noted that heroin is a highly addictive opioid that is rarely found in pill form.
