The Great Salt Lake Watershed Enhancement Trust has achieved its highest level of water transactions to date, moving approximately 72,500 acre-feet of water for the lake during 2025. This progress comes as part of a long-term effort to address the historic low water levels seen in 2022 which threatened Utah's environment, economy, and public health.
The Trust was established following the unanimous passage of HB 410 by the Utah State Legislature, which authorized a $40 million water trust to improve water quantity and quality in the Great Salt Lake. The National Audubon Society’s Saline Lakes Program and The Nature Conservancy in Utah serve as co-managers for the initiative.
In 2025, the Trust strategically timed water releases to maximize ecological and community benefits. Additionally, several wetland projects funded in 2023 and 2024 reached completion this year. These projects focused on restoring wetland habitats and improving water control structures at inflow points and wetland areas to enhance ecosystem productivity.
The Community Foundation of Utah acts as the fiscal steward for the Trust. The organization's 2025 Impact Report details specific partnerships and project impacts aimed at securing a healthy future for the Great Salt Lake and its surrounding wetlands.
