Miami has claimed the No. 1 spot in the latest AP Top 25 rankings as of October 18, following a week characterized by widespread upsets. This marks the first time the program has held the top position since 2002.
The latest rankings reflect a historic shake-up for the poll, which began in 1936. For the first time in the poll's history, five of the top seven teams lost on the same day during the regular season. The teams that suffered losses include Georgia, Notre Dame, Indiana, Alabama, and Texas. Additionally, it was the first time the No. 1 and No. 2 teams lost on the same day in the regular season since 2012, with a total of eight Top 25 teams losing during the weekend.
BYU has ascended to No. 2, marking its highest ranking since its 1984 national championship season. Ohio State follows in the No. 3 position. Despite their losses, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Indiana maintained their positions within the top six because of previous 6-0 starts and because their respective losses occurred against top-10 opponents.
The Big 12 released a statement regarding the officiating during the Notre Dame-BYU game, which resulted in a 28-24 upset. The conference stated that a review determined time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground, meaning the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew. The Big 12 said it will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process before next week's games.
The AP Top 25 is determined by 69 voters consisting of writers and broadcasters covering college football. While AP employees do not vote, they select voters to ensure wide representation across the country, including spots for national voters and representation in states with Bowl Subdivision schools.
