Miami has claimed the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2002, according to a report published October 18. The Hurricanes moved to the top of the rankings after a double overtime victory against rival Florida State to remain unbeaten.
The updated rankings reflect a significant shakeup, marking the first time in the AP poll's 90-year history that five of the top seven teams lost in the same week. Miami received 40 of the 70 first-place votes from the media voting panel. The Hurricanes took over the top spot from Georgia, which had spent one week at No. 1 before losing to Auburn at home. Georgia remains in the top five despite the loss.
BYU has risen to No. 2, marking its highest ranking since the 1984 national championship season. The Cougars secured the position after a 28-24 victory over Notre Dame, winning as a 10.5-point underdog to move to a 6-0 record for the third consecutive year. While the top three includes Ohio State, the rankings saw significant movement elsewhere, including Texas dropping 12 spots to No. 19 after a loss to Florida.
The current Top 25 includes several notable shifts and debuts. Arizona joined the rankings at No. 25 following four straight double-digit wins. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State and Mississippi State both dropped out of the rankings. In the Big 12, Utah is ranked No. 10, while UCLA has reached No. 9, matching its highest ranking since 2022. The SEC's top team is No. 5 Georgia.
Looking ahead to upcoming matchups, Miami is scheduled to host unranked Pittsburgh on Saturday.
