A 59-year-old man was taken into custody Friday evening after police responded to a hotel on a medical call and an armed man allegedly fired a shot near officers.
Bluffdale police were dispatched to the Woodsprings Suites, an extended stay hotel located near 1478 W. 14000 South, at approximately 6:43 p.m.
According to Lt. Zach Robinson of the Bluffdale Police, officers were called to address a medical incident where it was reported that a male had shot himself in a bathroom.
When officers entered the room to make contact with the individual, he produced a firearm. This led to a short standoff where officers backed out of the room as the man fired a round inside the bathroom.
After a short period, the man approached the front door of the hotel room and presented a revolver around the door. Lt. Robinson stated that the cylinder was open and contained no rounds at that time. An officer removed the weapon from his hand, and he was taken into custody.
Police did not find anyone in the room who had been shot, though they confirmed a couple of rounds had been fired. Officers checked other rooms on all floors and found no injured parties.
The man was transported to the Salt Lake County jail for booking. Officers from several nearby agencies also responded to assist with the incident.
