The Skyridge girls soccer team is entering a new era under head coach Jhoan Alvizo. Alvizo, a Spanish and Portuguese teacher at the school, takes over for Toby Peterson, who retired after the previous season ended.
Alvizo stated he is looking forward to relying on a strong senior class to help the team be successful. He noted that many seniors will contribute whether they are starting or coming off the bench.
Senior Bentley Knight was identified as a key player for the midfield. Other players expected to play significant roles include senior Lexi Blood on attack, junior Hallee Sheffield in the midfield, and senior Gracie Watts on defense. Blood was the team's leading scorer last season with eight goals and one assist. Sheffield contributed two goals and an assist, while Watts recorded one assist from the back line.
Regarding the level of competition, Alvizo described Region 3 as a challenging environment that helps prepare teams for the postseason.
The Falcons begin pre-region play this week against Olympus on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 5 p.m. Following that match, the team will travel to the St. George area for a three-match road trip. They are scheduled to play Desert Hills on Thursday, Aug. 6, Crimson Cliffs on Friday, and Snow Canyon on Saturday.
The Falcons will play three additional matches before beginning their Region 3 campaign in Lehi on Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
