South Salt Lake has implemented a prohibition on discharging fireworks within city boundaries for the upcoming Independence Day period. The restriction, effective from July 2 through July 5, comes as the city supports a ban driven by extremely dry conditions and severe fire risk.
The decision follows an Emergency Declaration issued by Governor Cox, which authorizes the State Forester to prohibit fireworks use in Utah through the July 4th holiday. Governor Cox noted that firefighters are observing fire behavior unlike anything they have witnessed before.
Following the Independence Day period, the state forester will evaluate fire conditions to decide if restrictions will also apply to the Pioneer Day holiday.
Individuals caught lighting fireworks are subject to criminal prosecution. Residents who observe fireworks being used within the city are encouraged to call non-emergency dispatch at (801) 840-4000.
