's PostCentury of Black MormonsJuly 19 at 8:41 AM In 1844, Samuel Chambers was baptized a Latter-day Saint in Mississippi, at age 13, as an enslaved teenager. He converted independent of anyone else. He then nourished a spark of faith for twenty years before gaining his freedom at the end of the Civil War and migrating with his wife Amanda to Utah in 1870.
