Former Skyridge Falcons quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne is part of a quarterback rotation at the University of Colorado as the Buffaloes prepare to host No. 12 Texas Tech on Saturday, Oct. 3. According to a September 29 report, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders indicated that Sweetwyne and Isaac Wilson both factor into his offensive plans.
Isaac Wilson, a junior who played at Corner Canyon High in Draper and spent two seasons at the University of Utah, is expected to start against the Red Raiders. CBS Sports reporter Matt Zenitz reported on Sept. 29 that Wilson is currently expected to start the game at 5:30 p.m. MDT on Fox. ESPN confirmed that Wilson has been participating in first-team reps during practice.
Sanders told reporters on Sept. 29 that he had not made a final decision and intended to evaluate practice before committing. The coach noted that if Wilson receives the nod, he believes both players will perform well. Sanders previously explained that he turned to Wilson during the Sept. 26 loss at Baylor because Sweetwyne represents a more long-term thought process, whereas Wilson helps get the team in the right positions.
Wilson, the younger brother of New Orleans Saints quarterback Zach Wilson, replaced starter Julian Lewis at halftime during the Baylor game. The Deseret News reported that Wilson completed 12 of 25 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown in the second half, leading scoring drives that tied the game at 13-13.
Sweetwyne, a true freshman listed at 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, enrolled early at Colorado in January after leaving Skyridge midway through his senior year. He transferred to Skyridge from Orem High and played 45 career games for the Falcons under head coach Justin Hemm, including two seasons as a starter.
During his junior year at Skyridge, Sweetwyne completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,675 yards and 19 touchdowns in 13 games, while rushing for 930 yards and 10 scores. As a senior, he achieved a 67 percent completion rate, throwing 32 touchdown passes and rushing for 911 yards as the Falcons reached the 6A state semifinals.
Sweetwyne's first college snaps occurred in Colorado's 52-21 victory over Weber State on Sept. 12, when he entered in the third quarter. In that game, he completed 7 passes for 35 yards and scored a 9-yard rushing touchdown, having previously beaten out Wilson for the backup role behind Lewis.
Colorado enters the upcoming game with a 2-2 overall record and 0-1 in Big 12 play. Following the matchup against Texas Tech and a bye week, the Buffaloes are scheduled to host No. 13 Utah on Oct. 17.
