Lone Peak High School announced a lunchtime humanitarian service program scheduled to begin September 24, according to a September 4 statement. The program provides students an opportunity to perform humanitarian service during their lunch hour every Thursday.
The program is designed to help students interact in a positive and safe environment while providing items for those in need. The projects involve donations to both local and international humanitarian organizations. Past projects included making blankets, sleeping mats, and toys for homeless and refugee children, as well as sending supportive letters to veterans and soldiers. Volunteers also helped create educational materials for children in refugee camps and for children in need within Utah Valley.
The school is seeking parent volunteers to help students learn these projects. While regular attendance is encouraged, volunteers are not required to attend every week. The school noted that this program offers a rare opportunity for parents to have direct interaction with students in a secondary school setting. An information and training meeting is expected toward the end of September, with the specific date, time, and location to be announced.
