Alpine City Cemetery will hold a wreath-laying ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 19, to honor veterans buried at the site as part of National Wreaths Across America Day, according to a November 6 announcement.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
Color Guard Scout Troop Unit 10G and the Alpine Youth Council will place seven wreaths during the event. Each wreath represents a branch of the military, and one wreath will be dedicated to prisoners of war and those missing in action.
As volunteers place each wreath, they will pause to say the veteran's name aloud. The ceremony emulates traditions held at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. According to the Arlington National Cemetery website, its location will be one of more than 5,500 participating sites for the 2026 Wreaths Across America Day.
Individuals attending the event may bring a personal wreath to lay after the formal ceremony concludes. Wreaths are provided through volunteer groups consisting of veterans, truckers, and the Pony Express Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Residents interested in volunteering should call Marilyn Thomsen at 801-787-8086.
Sponsorship opportunities are also available for $17 per wreath for a specific veteran's grave at Alpine Cemetery or another participating cemetery. Orders must be placed through the Alpine City website by Dec. 1.
