Katie Balakir, a senior policy associate at HEAL Utah, was scheduled to speak at an event titled Beyond the Podium: Using the 2034 Olympics to Build a Healthier, More Connected Utah.
According to a Weber State University webpage, the presentation was scheduled for March 19 at 4:15 p.m. in Room 320.
Balakir supports HEAL Utah's energy and clean air campaigns. Her professional experience in Utah includes working on transportation policy and public land management.
Balakir's interest in environmental issues stems from her upbringing in Northwest Indiana as the daughter of two steelworkers. After her father developed lung cancer, she gained personal insight into how long-term exposure to air pollution can impact health.
Balakir focuses on bridging the gap between community and policy. She aims to ensure that individuals most disproportionately impacted have a seat at decision-making tables.
