Weber State University is expanding its research and educational footprint through the acquisition of 47 acres in Island Park, Idaho, for a future Yellowstone Field Station. The property, located near Henrys Lake State Park and just outside Yellowstone National Park, was purchased to provide students with access to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife in the lower 48 states.
The development of the field station follows significant donor support, including a combined $1 million gift from Mary Hall, George Hall, and Mary Ann Miller last year. Once completed, the facility is planned to include research areas, dormitories, and communal spaces for students.
In addition to environmental research expansions, Weber State launched a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner emphasis within its Doctor of Nursing Practice program in January 2025. The initial cohort consists of sixteen students who are expected to graduate in April 2027, aiming to address the growing demand for advanced practice registered nurses specializing in behavioral health.
The university's energy engineering major is also addressing state-wide needs. As the first institution in Utah to offer this degree, the program focuses on the electrical and mechanical engineering concepts required to manage a changing energy landscape. The Weber Industrial Training and Assessment Center, directed by An Ho, recently received a three-year, $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to provide hands-on energy assessments for Utah manufacturers.
The university's global engagement remains high through various study abroad and competitive programs. The Model United Nations teams recently won multiple awards at the Far West Conference in California, with students representing Myanmar, India, and Belize. Additionally, students participated in international educational trips to Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico.
In the arts, the Weber State Dance Program reported a productive 2024–25 year, featuring collaborations with the Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company and Repertory Dance Theatre. The program also saw student choreographers present work at the American College Dance Association High Desert Regional Conference in Wyoming.
Weber State continues to invest in campus infrastructure, including the $48.6 million renovation of the David O. McKay Education Building, which held its grand opening on October 10, 2025. The facility serves as a hub for child and family studies, teacher education, and the WSU Charter School.
