During the excursion, Senate Majority Whip Chris Wilson, R-Logan, noted the visible impact of water levels when mud churned up by the airboat struck him.
Wilson told FOX 13 News that the experience served as an "object lesson," stating that the presence of mud indicated a need for more water in the lake. The legislative visit comes as Utah prepares for the upcoming session, following years of significant investment in the region. Since the lake dropped to a historic low in 2022, lawmakers have passed dozens of bills and allocated approximately $1 billion toward water conservation measures.

Despite the historic low in 2022, state officials reported that Utah will end the current water year with the Great Salt Lake sitting one foot above that historic low. Representative Jill Koford, R-Ogden, characterized the current status as a success, noting that the state is avoiding absolute ecological collapse despite facing the worst snow season on record.
However, Koford, who is currently campaigning for a Senate seat, emphasized that more action is required to ensure long-term stability. She announced plans to introduce legislation in the upcoming session designed to capture water saved by cities and towns through conservation efforts. Koford noted that while the state has already implemented mechanisms like tiered pricing for water districts, new policy focus is needed to deliver those specific municipal water savings directly to the lake.

A primary focus of upcoming legislative discussions includes the eradication of invasive phragmites, a plant species described as a "major water hog" that consumes significant amounts of water from the wetlands. Reducing these invasive plants is viewed as a method to increase the volume of water available to the lake.
Lawmakers are also looking for ways to incentivize the state's top water user, the agricultural sector, to dedicate conserved water to the lake. A pilot project involving farmers in Cache Valley has already demonstrated success, and officials announced that this initiative is scheduled to roll out statewide next month.

Great Salt Lake Commissioner Hannah Freeze, who was recently confirmed to the role, joined the lawmakers during the tour and expressed optimism regarding the current state of the ecosystem. Freeze stated that the wetlands are currently thriving.
Despite the positive outlook, Freeze is seeking additional funding to secure water and implement infrastructure improvements. She identified potential water sources, including the West Desert's Newfoundland Basin and impounded water in the Stansbury Bay area, which could be engineered to direct water toward the Great Salt Lake. Freeze outlined an ambitious funding target, aiming to secure $100 million each from state, federal, and private philanthropic sources this year.

As the tour concluded, Commissioner Freeze urged the public to maintain water conservation efforts, noting that collaborative work is essential to the lake's survival. She remarked that if stakeholders can move past finger-pointing and recognize their shared interest in the lake's health, it would represent a significant success for the state.
