The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement on Friday regarding the death of Norway's King Harald V, according to a August 28 report.
King Harald V died at age 89 in an Oslo hospital where he was receiving treatment for a rare blood disorder. The Royal Palace stated he passed away peacefully at 6:35 a.m. local time.
King Harald had been admitted to the national hospital 10 days prior, suffering from complications from haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood condition that depletes red blood cells and causes shortness of breath and fatigue. His family was called to his bedside after his condition worsened on Thursday.
In a statement, the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said they join the people of Norway in mourning the passing of the King. The Church stated that King Harald provided a steady and unifying presence for his nation throughout his life of service.
King Harald is survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, also 89; the new king, Haakon; their daughter Princess Märtha Louise; and six grandchildren. King Haakon, 53, was scheduled to hold an extraordinary council of state with the government later on Friday.
King Charles and Queen Camilla expressed profound sadness on X regarding the death of their cousin, extending condolences to Queen Sonja and her family. The Royal Palace reported that the royal flag was flying at half mast on the palace roof.
