The Salt Lake City Planning Commission held a meeting on August 26, 2026, to address several zoning and landmark designation proposals, according to meeting minutes published September 10.
Commissioners voted to recommend that the City Council approve the designation of the city-owned Gilgal Sculpture Garden as a Landmark Site. The proposal, initiated at the direction of Mayor Erin Mendenhall, would subject the property to the Historic Preservation Overlay to provide demolition protection and oversight for future modifications. During the hearing, representatives from Preservation Utah and Friends of Gilgal Garden expressed support for the designation.
The commission also voted to recommend approval to the City Council for a zoning map amendment at 715 S Gudgell Ct. The request seeks to change the property from RMF-30 to RMF-35 to enable housing development on smaller lots. The recommendation for approval includes a condition that both developed units be offered for sale.
Additionally, the commission voted to forward a recommendation to the City Council for a zoning text amendment regarding gas stations. This amendment, initiated by Mayor Erin Mendenhall, aims to correct clerical and numbering errors within the city code without changing existing regulations.
During the meeting, Planning Manager Krissy Gilmore reported that the commission stipend annual cap increased from $500 to $1,000 starting July 1, 2026. It was also noted that Ben Raskin was appointed as the new district 7 commissioner by the City Council on August 22, 2026. The Planning Division is currently seeking a representative for district 2.
The commission also voted to reconsider and subsequently approve the minutes from the August 12, 2026, meeting with a modification to the language regarding a planned development motion.
