ProvoREADS is celebrating the unique milestones and growth that help children build reading confidence throughout October, according to a report published Oct. 12. The initiative emphasizes that every child develops at their own pace, whether by reading a new word or attempting a challenging book.
The October Family Reading Challenge encourages families to read together by reading aloud, taking turns, or having children tell stories through pictures. To support this, the program suggests using conversation starters before, during, and after reading to help children explore stories. Families are encouraged to let children help choose books and to recognize their efforts as they progress.
A ProvoREADS Family Literacy Night is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, from 5:00–7:30 p.m. at Shoreline Middle School. This Parent University event is for families with children in PreK–3rd grade and will include literacy activities, practical ideas for reading at home, a complimentary family dinner, and a free book for every child.
