Meta announced Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, that it is expanding its Eagle Mountain Data Center, a move that will increase the company's total investment in Utah to more than $3 billion. The expansion is expected to support over 1,200 construction workers at the peak of the project and create more than 300 permanent jobs once the facility is completed.
Community and Education Investments
The expansion includes a variety of community-focused investments aimed at supporting the growing population of Eagle Mountain. Meta announced a $450,000 grant to the City of Eagle Mountain for the construction of the Walden Park Astronomy Park, which brings the company's total contribution to that project to $700,000. The facility is described as a first-of-its-kind regional center that will feature seven telescopes, a retractable roof, and year-round STEM education, community programming, and public stargazing opportunities.
Supporting Local Schools
To address future infrastructure needs, Meta is investing $600,000 to acquire three acres for a future elementary school in partnership with the Lake Mountain School District. This land acquisition is intended to secure space ahead of anticipated regional growth. Additionally, the company is committing $1.5 million to the Lake Mountain Education Foundation, along with an ongoing annual contribution of $50,000 to support student learning experiences, specifically focusing on early childhood literacy.
Local Economic Contributions
Meta reported that it has already contributed more than $6.2 million to local schools and organizations in the area. Previous investments include support for hydroponics programs at Cedar Valley High School, the Alpine School District's Christa McAuliffe Space Center, and the Small Business Launchpad at the Valley Crossroads Chamber of Commerce. The company has also provided $4.85 million to the Eagle Mountain City's Affordable Housing Fund, which has supported mortgage assistance for 66 local families.
Water Stewardship and Sustainability
Addressing environmental concerns, Meta stated it is prioritizing water stewardship with a global goal to become water positive by 2030. This goal means the company aims to restore more water than it consumes globally in areas where it operates. For the new buildings in Eagle Mountain, the company will implement a water-efficient, closed-loop liquid cooling system with dry cooling, resulting in no operational water use for the cooling system itself.
Environmental Mitigation Efforts
According to the company, onsite water use for the new facility will be limited to domestic uses, fire protection, and equipment maintenance. The projected annual operational water use is expected to be less than that of one typical golf course in the region. Meta also highlighted its partnership with the City to repurpose a portion of water from its server cooling systems to irrigate Cory Wride Memorial Park, a major recreational area for the community.
Infrastructure and Restoration
Meta also noted its ongoing work on water restoration projects, including the Hobble Creek Flow Restoration Project and the Provo River Flow Restoration Project. These initiatives have collectively restored more than 726 million gallons of water per year. Furthermore, the company has invested more than $50 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water infrastructure, since breaking ground in 2018.
Clean Energy and Grid Reliability
Regarding energy use, Meta stated it pays the full costs of its data centers energy use to ensure other consumers are not negatively impacted. The company has fully funded new generation and grid infrastructure in Eagle Mountain to help improve the reliability of the Rocky Mountain Power grid. The Eagle Mountain Data Center's electricity use is matched with 100% clean and renewable energy. This is part of a larger effort in Utah where Meta has added more than 1.7 GW of clean and renewable energy and 600MWh of battery storage across 13 sites, including support for the 150-megawatt Faraday Energy Storage project owned by Lydian Energy.
