Nebo School District is rallying around a theme of being "that friend" as a new school year begins, according to a notice on the district website.
Superintendent Rick Nielsen joined Lindsey Hughes and Seth Sorenson to discuss the meaning of the three-word theme within schools and communities.
Inspired in part by Dr. Kyle Reyes’ Lenses of Humanity, the theme focuses on connection, reflection, and empathy. Nielsen noted that being "that friend" does not require being someone's best friend, but rather recognizing what someone needs in a specific moment and choosing to show up.
Examples of this include teachers providing students a reason to attend school, coworkers noticing when someone is struggling, or educators reassuring parents on the first day of kindergarten.
As more than 5,000 Nebo employees welcome students back to school, Nielsen expressed gratitude for the families who entrust educators with their children and for those throughout the district who serve them each day.
