The Summit County Library is hosting an event titled Memories of Rockport to discuss the historical impact of the construction of Rockport Reservoir. The program is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 at 6:30 PM at The Old Church at Rockport State Park.
The event serves as a local tie-in to this year's One Book One Community selection, Go As a River by Shelly Read.
The novel Go As a River is set in Iola, Colorado, and follows the displacement caused by the construction of the Blue Mesa Reservoir. The story examines how modernization and development can erase communities connected to the land.
A similar historical event occurred in Summit County approximately 70 years ago when the damming of the Weber River led to the creation of Rockport Reservoir, submerging the town of Rockport.
During the event, Alan Siddoway will share his family's experiences living in the town of Rockport before it was submerged. The presentation will take place at 2719 South Rockport Rd.
