Southern Utah defeated the Weber State Wildcats 47-42 in the Beehive Bowl at Eccles Coliseum, according to a September 5 report. The victory improved the Thunderbirds' season record to 1-1.
The high-scoring matchup saw both teams trade leads throughout the game. Southern Utah opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Will Burns. While Weber State built a 29-20 halftime lead, the Thunderbirds responded in the second half with scoring drives from Floyd Chalk, Joshua Acord, and Devin Downing to take a 41-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Weber State regained the lead early in the fourth quarter, but Southern Utah responded with a nine-play, 75-yard drive completed by a 22-yard touchdown run from Chalk. Parker Vance secured the win for the Thunderbirds with a second interception late in the game.
Floyd Chalk led the Thunderbirds on the ground with 183 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. Will Burns contributed 148 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, along with 146 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. Joshua Acord recorded five receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown, while Devin Downing added a 16-yard touchdown reception.
On the defensive side, Mason Stromstad, Parker Vance, and Christian Sampson each recorded six tackles. Vance also recorded an interception and three pass breakups, while Sampson forced a fumble.
Southern Utah was scheduled to play Colorado State at Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado, in a game that was scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT.
