Seven CommonSpirit Health Mountain Region hospitals received recognition in the U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best Hospital rankings announced on August 3. These hospitals received High Performing designations for their ability to handle complex and difficult cases across various medical specialties.
The High Performing designation is the highest rating available for specific procedures or conditions, a distinction typically earned by only 15% to 30% of the hospitals evaluated by the annual rankings. The evaluation process assesses how well U.S. adult hospitals provide 37 different types of care.
Penrose Hospital earned High Performing designations for Pacemaker Implantation, Prostate Cancer Surgery, Ear Nose & Throat Surgery, Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma, Heart Attack, and Pneumonia. St. Anthony Hospital received designations for Heart Bypass Surgery, Lung Cancer Surgery, Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma, and Heart Attack. Mercy Hospital was recognized for Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion), Pacemaker Implantation, and Heart Attack.
St. Anthony North Hospital earned designations for Heart Attack, Diabetes, and Pneumonia. OrthoColorado Hospital received recognition for Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement, and Back Surgery (Spinal Fusion). Holy Cross Hospital - Salt Lake was recognized for Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery, while Holy Cross Hospital - Jordan Valley earned a designation for Heart Attack.
Dr. Christopher Johnston, Mountain Region Chief Medical Officer, stated that the recognition signifies that the teams are among the best in the nation and consistently excel in critical areas such as cardiac care, orthopedics, and complex surgeries. He noted that the recognition underscores a commitment to delivering specialized care to local communities.
More than half of the eligible full-service acute care hospitals within CommonSpirit Health were recognized in the annual rankings. The organization received a total of 288 high performing ratings. Thomas McGinn, MD, MPH, Executive Vice President, Chief Physician Executive Officer at CommonSpirit Health, said the recognition highlights the pursuit of clinical excellence and compassionate care across the national footprint.
CommonSpirit Health is a large nonprofit Catholic healthcare organization that provides integrated health services. The system operates more than 2,300 clinics, care sites, and 137 hospital-based locations across 24 states, serving more than 20 million patients annually.
