Grand County has issued a property scam alert following reports that scammers are attempting to sell properties they do not own.
To protect against these fraudulent sales, officials suggest several preventative measures for property owners in the area.
Property owners can take steps to help guard against scams by asking the Grand County Recorder to add their email and phone number to their property records.
When preparing to sell a property, it is recommended to use a licensed title company. This process helps the Grand County Recorder's office confirm the legitimacy of the transaction.
Additionally, owners can enroll in the Property Watch program. This tool generates an automated email to inform owners of title activity, though officials noted it is an informative tool rather than a guaranteed preventive measure.
To add a property to the Property Watch program, users should select Grand County in the upper right corner and click the Property Watch button.
Users must enter their property's parcel number, which is available on property tax statements or via the County tax search. For parcels in the Town of Castle Valley, the format is always 09-0000-xxxx.
After entering the number and pressing return, owners should verify that the owner information is correct, add their contact information, and click submit.
