Timpanogos Regional Hospital has earned a three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for its patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedures, according to a September 28 statement. The rating, which denotes the highest category of quality, places the Orem facility among the elite for heart bypass surgery in the US and Canada.
The current STS rating for Timpanogos Regional is based on CABG surgery data covering a three-year period from January 2023 through December 2025. Dr. Matt Pollard, the hospital's chief medical officer, stated that the rating validates the quality of the program and reflects the commitment of the cardiovascular surgeons, nurses, and care team members providing evidence-based care.
Dr. Spencer Melby, a thoracic surgeon who has performed these procedures at the hospital since 2023, said the rating shows why the community should trust the facility for life-changing surgery. He noted that the operating rooms, nursing teams, and equipment work together to provide a strong environment for CABG procedures.
The STS star rating system is a highly regarded measure of quality that rates the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs. According to Ram Kumar Subramanyan, MD, PhD, Chair of the STS Council on Quality and Research, the STS leads quality improvement efforts by maintaining a clinical database that uses high-fidelity risk models to provide risk-adjusted outcomes. This voluntary public reporting provides patients and families with information to help them make informed decisions.
