The Arizona Wildcats fell to the No. 15 BYU Cougars 28-17 in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 12, according to a report published Sept. 12. The loss, which occurred at LaVell Edwards Stadium, marks Arizona's first defeat of the season and their second consecutive conference-opening road loss.
Arizona held a 17-14 lead at halftime. The Wildcats' scoring was aided by quarterback Noah Fifita, who completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to tight end Shane King. Fifita also recorded an 11-yard rushing touchdown on the team's opening drive.
BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier contributed two rushing touchdowns to the Cougars' victory. Bachmeier's first passing touchdown of the game was a 25-yard slant to wide receiver Reggie Frischknecht. Additionally, Kyler Kasper caught two touchdown passes for BYU, including a score in the third quarter and a second touchdown that served as a decisive blow for the Wildcats.
The game saw significant shifts in momentum during the second half. Arizona was outgained 233-87 in the second half and was held to negative 9 rushing yards in the fourth quarter. A critical fourth-down attempt by Arizona with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter resulted in a turnover on downs at the BYU 21-yard line.
Arizona wide receiver Giovanni Richardson left the game in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury after being tackled by Cade Uluave. Richardson had led the Wildcats in receiving with five catches for 48 yards before his exit.
Arizona returns to nonconference play against Northern Illinois at Casino Del Sol Stadium on Sept. 19. The Wildcats' next scheduled game is a road trip to Washington State on Sept. 26.
