ESPN's College GameDay returned to the BYU campus on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, marking the program's first visit to Provo since 2009. The live broadcast from the lawn at Heritage Halls preceded a highly anticipated AP Top-10 matchup between No. 8 BYU and No. 2 Notre Dame.
Star-Studded Broadcast Lineup
The broadcast featured a high-profile panel including host Rece Davis and analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban. According to ESPN, the show also included college football insider Pete Thamel, analyst "Stanford Steve" Coughlin, and reporters Jen Lada and Jess Sims.
Significant Program Milestones
The event served as the second time BYU has hosted the pregame show and the first time the program has hosted an AP Top-10 matchup at LaVell Edwards Stadium. BYU entered the contest with a 5-0 record, a mark that matches the total number of 5-0 starts across the program's first 94 seasons from 1922 to 2015. This season represents the third consecutive year and fifth time under head coach Kalani Sitake that the Cougars have opened 5-0.
High-Stakes Top-10 Matchup
Notre Dame arrived in Provo on a 16-game winning streak, the second-longest active streak in the FBS. All 16 of the Irish victories have been decided by double digits. While Notre Dame holds a 7-2 all-time series lead against the Cougars, the matchup is considered one of the biggest tests for the Irish this season.
Scaling the Production
The scale of the production has increased significantly since the show last visited Provo in 2009. While the 2009 broadcast required three semi-trucks, the 2026 production utilized eight trucks. BYU Associate Athletic Director for Broadcast Relations Duff Tittle noted that the university has become more proactive in managing large-scale network productions, such as the FOX shows, which has helped facilitate the complex technical needs for ESPN.
Show Highlights and Segments
During the broadcast, analyst Pat McAfee was seen pulling out a Book of Mormon. The show also featured a segment titled "The GameDay Film Room with Nick Saban," which provided a breakdown of the Utah high-powered offense under offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven.
Fan Engagement and Traditions
The College GameDay broadcast was preceded by fan activities, including a scavenger hunt that allowed students to compete for premium seating and merchandise. A fan-favorite segment, Pat McAfee's "Kicking is Easy" contest, also returned for its fourth season, offering fans a chance to attempt a 33-yard field goal.
