The University of Utah will close its Sandy campus at the end of 2026, according to a statement from the university. The closure is part of a state mandate requiring the university to reallocate approximately $20 million toward areas of student and workforce demand.
Students were informed of the closure on Friday, three days before fall semester classes were scheduled to begin on Monday. For the 660 students currently enrolled, classes at the Sandy Center will continue this fall as scheduled. Many of these students also take classes online or at the main campus in Salt Lake City, located 25 minutes north.
Paul Kohn, senior vice provost for strategic enrollment and student success, said the university is committed to helping students navigate their options and make plans to continue their progress toward degrees. The university stated it will work with students to help them determine how to continue their education in the spring.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the closure of the Sandy campus was not part of the original cost-saving measures, noting that the university was recruiting students for that location as recently as mid-July. The university is also currently re-evaluating its educational offerings throughout Salt Lake County.
