Extreme heat is moving across Utah this week after Salt Lake City recorded its first triple-digit temperature of the summer on Sunday, reaching 101 degrees. The high arrived on schedule, as the average date for the season's first triple-digit day is July 6.
Triple-Digit Temperatures Arrive
The heatwave continues to impact the Wasatch Front, with temperatures expected to reach the upper 90s during another hot week across the state. Sunshine is forecast to dominate much of the region.
In Southern Utah, the temperature is projected to soar to 105 degrees in St. George. This follows a period where extreme heat warnings were issued for parts of the region, including an Excessive Heat Watch that predicted weekend temperatures as high as 195 degrees in Southern Utah.
Recent Temperature Fluctuations
The current heat follows a period of significant temperature swings throughout the spring and summer. One month ago, the Wasatch Front experienced a warm-up where 90-degree heat arrived following a pleasant Sunday in the 70s.
During that period, Monday temperatures saw the Wasatch Front starting in the low 50s under partly cloudy skies. This followed a transition from much cooler conditions earlier in the spring.
Previous Weather Emergencies
The state has faced several instances of severe weather-related emergencies in recent months. Two months ago, a significant storm system brought widespread rain to Utah valleys and heavy snow to the mountains overnight, which left roads at higher elevations slick and snow-covered.
In a separate event two months ago, Governor Spencer Cox declared a state of emergency after freezing temperatures caused widespread crop losses across the state. This declaration followed a period where a freeze threatened orchards in southern Utah County that had already been weakened by dry conditions.

Eight months ago, a low-pressure system brought snow and rain to southern Utah, eventually pushing north into the Wasatch Front. At that time, the system caused periodic showers throughout the region.
