A new 1.9-mile paved shared-use trail is being developed in Vernal to create a vital active transportation connection. Running from US-40 to 500 North (SR-121), the project follows portions of the Steinaker Service Canal corridor and 500 North.
The trail is designed to serve residents of all ages and abilities, providing improved access to several key destinations including Uintah High School, Terra Academy, Uintah Basin Technical College, the USU Uintah Basin Campus, Central Cove Early Education Center, the Golden Age Senior Center, and multiple local churches.
The project aims to transform an underutilized canal corridor into a functional pathway for biking, walking, and other non-motorized uses. As the first trail of its kind in this area of Vernal, it acts as a key link within the Vernal and Uintah County Trails Master Plan.
This initiative supports long-term public health and mobility goals by increasing safe trail access. The development is being led by the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) in partnership with Uintah County, Vernal City, and other local stakeholders.
The project is supported by the Utah Trail Network (UTN), a statewide initiative focused on expanding and improving trail systems across Utah.
According to the project timeline, bidding is planned for Fall 2025 following the completion of design. Construction is scheduled to take place between Fall 2025 and Spring 2026.
