BYU players reported that defensive focus has been the primary emphasis of offseason practice following an exhibition victory against Nebraska on Friday, October 16, 2026. Junior guard Collin Chandler stated that defense has been the whole focus of practice as the team seeks to establish a new identity.
The Cougars' emphasis on defense follows seasons where the team struggled defensively despite high-ranking offensive performances. In 2024-25, BYU ranked 206th in points allowed and 357th in 3-pointers allowed. During the following season, the team was 225th nationally in points allowed and 284th in 3-pointers allowed per game.
In the October 16, 2026, win against Nebraska, BYU held the team to 37.3% from the field and forced 18 turnovers. While the Huskers made 10 of 24 3-pointers in the 72-61 victory, Chandler noted the team was working on being aggressive in passing lanes, rotations, and deflections.
Head coach Kevin Young credited guards Nate Pickens and Brooks Bahr for providing energy off the bench. Young noted that Bahr is tough and that Pickens is capable of guarding, stating their energy helped the team in the second half of the Nebraska game.
Post player Jaxon Kohler, who previously played four years at Michigan State, also contributed to the effort. Kohler's eligibility was recently impacted by a California judge's ruling that extended an injunction.
The Cougars are preparing for an upcoming exhibition game against UNLV, which is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. MT at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. UNLV currently leads the all-time series against BYU 19-17.
UNLV enters the matchup after finishing 18-17 last season under head coach Josh Pastner. The Rebels' roster includes forward Tyrin Jones and guard AJ Storr, who is seeking a fifth year of eligibility.
The exhibition game between BYU and UNLV will be broadcast on MW+.
