Mayor Tish Buroker has invited Riverton residents to join in upcoming July 4 celebrations, which will be particularly significant as the nation celebrates the semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of America. The city has held several events leading up to this special day.
A highlighted event for the celebration is a performance of the play 1776. Riverton is one of only two cities in Utah approved to perform this production. Due to the serious and stirring nature of the play, officials are asking parents to leave children under the age of five at home.
Residents have recently been reading the book 1776, which has led to an increased appreciation for the challenges and sacrifices involved in the birth of America. Through this reading, residents have learned about the difficulties faced during the eight-year war, including soldiers facing hunger, cold, and poor clothing while the British army was better provisioned.
Mayor Buroker noted that despite the discouragement and lost battles faced by troops during the war, the battle was eventually won and a great nation was born.
