Licensed Clinical Social Worker Ben Wunderin shared insights on mental health during National Emotional Wellness Month in October 2026. The discussion addressed the importance of self-validation and the physiological benefits associated with physical touch.
Regarding physical touch, research indicates that an eight-second hug can provide several health benefits. According to science, a mutually-consented hug can reduce cortisol, the hormone responsible for the majority of stress in the body, which helps create a sense of calm. Additionally, such an embrace can release oxytocin, a hormone responsible for regulating social bonding, which helps strengthen connections and trust between individuals.
A mutually-consented hug also triggers the release of neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which are responsible for increasing a sense of happiness and joy. These effects may increase if eight-second hugs are engaged in more than once a day. For those who do not receive physical touch or do not enjoy it, finding ways to love oneself is essential for mental health. Finding reasons to love oneself can help ensure that a lack of external validation does not lead to depression.
Ben Wunderin, an LCSW, noted that during October 2026, there were no submissions for advice or mental health requests. He encouraged those struggling with mental health to seek professional help or call 988.
